I was at a bar today and down 2 beers. We shared the table with my friend’s friend’s friend. He happened to be deeply interested in religion and after 20+ years of studying Christianity he has turned to the eastern philosophies of Hinduism and Buddhism. We had a pretty interesting discussion about God, consciousness, concept of the finite and infinite, the Self etc. I do not claim that I understood all that he was saying but I did get the gist. He too was aware that he was in the process of understanding things and so was eager to discuss it with someone who would hear it out. Apparently not many people choose to discuss this.
From all the things we discussed, there was one particular thing that I would like to mention here. I asked him whether the cause of all the religion based conflicts in the world is the deliberate misinterpretation of religious texts. His answer was pretty interesting. It was a thing that I have been aware of and probably you all are. But talking about it today, in this context, totally made sense. Conflicts in this world will never end.
Why do conflicts arise? It is because of differences. The reason for the difference can be as simple as two hungry people claiming the same last piece of bread or as pointless as two religions fighting over their concept and interpretation of God. It would be simple to say that these conflicts can be resolved by resolving differences….by condemning the wrong and embracing the right, by defeating evil and glorifying the good. But that is where the catch lies. All these terms are relative and subjective. What is right for one person may not be the same for another. What is good for one will be evil for another. And there is no way you can change everyone’s perception. In theological language… although we share the same consciousness, our perceptions of the finite and levels of awareness are different. Pretty heavy, isn’t it? The same cross seen by Christians and seen by the rest, evoke a different emotions.
The very existence or presence of something depends on the absence of another thing. Darkness is absence of light. Good is absence of evil. Honesty is not being dishonest. And if you observe, these are abstract things, just concepts. Hence if there was never any evil in this world, we would not have known the concept of Good. We would not have known light as we know it if there was no darkness. Thus, there is always a conflict, and it is eternal. There is nothing anyone can do to resolve it. Let us assume that all religions are dissolved and the whole world follows one religion or absolutely follows none. Then there will be thousands of other reasons which would give rise to conflicts.
The very concept of Utopia exists because the world is imperfect and there is discontent. It is that illusion, that mirage which we dream of. But alas, it is just what it is… an illusion.
conflicts are because people forget basics principles of all religions (Take any religion in this world) : Truth, Love and Joy stays at the core. Its not because we are not able to resolve but its because we prefer giving our ego much higher preference over understanding(be that person of any religion). Understanding is compassion and compassion is a part of showing love, staying by joy. If you think on it for a while, all definitions of conflicts , misunderstanding should/can be dissolved and embracing differences leaving your ego will fall under an umbrella of those principles. Why ? because differences are going to be there. The very root of all differences is adaptations and division based on regions and geographic conditions. It is the ignorance of those core values which leads to disrespect of difference and hence the conflicts. And those core values are never different for any religion on earth. We as humans are incomplete to reach a certain level of understanding. You cannot expect that from everyone. Hence you will find people of certain highest stature and character occurring in this world like Mahatma Gandhi. They are called 'Satvaguni' and 'Satvaguni' people are not categorized by religion because there whole life spent to propagate those 3 values and not any religion. Jesus, chokhamela, Shri Shankaracharya, Dyaneshwar et al didn't propagate any religion. If we look closely at their life they tried propagate surrendering to almighty in their own region and space of world by binding ourselves to those 3 values. But as I said these 'Satvaguni' people are rare. Not everybody can be like them. They are there and were to tell us common people to follow them. The proud feelings of that following and ego make us ignore those 3 values. But that is what ultimately we as a human have to conquer when we follow 'Satvaguni' people.
ReplyDeletea very accurate analysis on the issue yaar.. but perhaps the path to resolving such conflicts starts with understanding the differences that cause them..
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the point where most religions falter are when they condemn the beliefs of other religions as WRONG instead of accepting and respecting the differences.
Of course, for this to happen, at least 1 side needs to be willing to compromise their own ideals, and sadly that is where the dream of Utopia shatters :).
pardon my typos :)
ReplyDeleteToo much of philosophy. After reading all your views my head has started to tumble :P
ReplyDeleteYou'd be surprised to know the translation of what our Guru said in the "Granth". Here it is..
*****************************************************
IK OnKaar
There is but One all embracing and all-powerful Divinity, Who manifests Himself first in the shape of the sacred word (OnKaar), and then through the whole created Universe. He is the One-in-All and the All-in-One. He is the Eternal Reality.
SatNaam
Eternal and True is his name (Satnaam)
Karta
He is the Creator, and has the power of independent self-creation. He permeates the whole creation.
Purakh
He is the only male element in the Universe and all else is female.
NirBhau
He is above all fear
NirVair
free from all thoughts of enmity.
Akaal Moorat Ajoonee Saibhang
He is immortal, free from birth and rebirth, and can be realized in every created thing. He is self-existent.
The whole universe is dependent for its existence on Him but he is self-existent; the Generator of all, without any one to generate Him.
Gur Prasaad
He can be realized through the grace of the Guru: - The Teacher who is God conscious, and sees Him both within and without.

Now you're speechless, aren't you ? :)
@Anup,Veer: your comments are really nice. but the problem is that although (probably) all religions give similar messages, we choose to interpret them in ways which cause differences. either we are really ignorant or we choose to be.
ReplyDeleteOh C'mon Da!!
ReplyDeleteThis world is really a small place and life is too short
to do conflicts.
"Aur Khuda ki Raah bhi Mohabbat ki rah hain"
We all love you, never think other ways. :)
Da, I came across this blog where Kwame Anthony Appiah said that the key to relationship (not even solving conflicts here) is re-practicing a good old thing called "conversations."
ReplyDeleteToo many times we think and act as if we needed agreement, and if not, it's the end of the world (or the beginning of conflict?) so actually Appiah made me think differently about relationships and conversations.
Essentially what you are trying to do here in this blog, starting conversations. So, good job for that.
Oh, one more thing, of course it would be nice if we have conversations while we are sober, haha :)
ReplyDeleteAnd of course, the link:

Thanks Sita fir sharing the article.. nice one. And it is so true.. Good old-fashioned conversations are the key.. and yes, sober conversations :) But.. a few drinks do make the conversations interesting for sure :P
